Gold medal Olympic skiers Bode Miller and Julia Mancuso will be among the headliners when Squaw Valley ski resort in Lake Tahoe hosts the 2014 Nature Valley U.S. Alpine Championships March 19-23.
This year’s Alpine Championships will be an opportunity to see Team USA’s top skiers compete on home soil at Squaw Valley ski resort.
Other local Tahoe skiers who competed in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi and expected to compete at Squaw will be Marco Sullivan and Travis Ganong, who placed 5th in the downhill during in his first Olympics.
In addition to Squaw Valley’s own athletes, the U.S. Alpine Championships are expected to include Olympic champions Miller (Franconia, NH), Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, NY) and Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO), all of whom earned medals in February’s Olympic Winter Games.
In addition to hosting the U.S. Alpine Championships, Squaw Valley will also host a Welcome Home Celebration for all of the Olympic athletes from the Reno/Tahoe area. The Welcome Home Celebration will take place on the evening of Friday, March 21, and will feature an athlete parade, fireworks, athlete autograph session, live music and more.
“It takes a community to raise an Olympian – and it takes a community to welcome them home,” said Andy Wirth, president and CEO of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. “We invite everyone to join us as our entire community welcomes home our region’s athletes from competing so very well in Russia.”
Mancuso captured a bronze medal in Sochi, her fourth Olympic medal, the most by any U.S. alpine skier.
“It’s great to get to race at my home mountain and it’s awesome to have Squaw’s support for ski racing,” said Mancuso, who trains at Squaw Valley. “They did an exceptional job last season, so I definitely look forward to some more great races on home snow during Nationals.”
