The 2022-23 ski season in North America has officially come to an end.
Timberline ski resort made it official early Sunday afternoon (Aug. 13), ending a season that reportedly started Nov. 11, 2022. The resort says the closing day marked 276th day of the ski season, one day more than Mammoth Mountain in California, which closed a week earlier (Aug. 6).
“Timberline’s last day on snow is this Sunday, August 13th. We’re the last ski area in the U.S. open this summer; come get it while it lasts!” stated a message from the ski resort.
An Oregon ski resort located on famed Mt. Hood, Timberline received 706 inches of snow this season. The ski resort says it has 4,540 vertical feet, more than any other ski resort in the U.S. Timberline is located near the top of Mt. Hood, an 11,245-foot volcano, and is the tallest mountain in Oregon.
An August closing is nothing unusual for Timberline. Last season Timberline stayed open through Aug. 2. The closing date in 2021 was Aug. 15, and in 2020 (having reopened after covid closing), it remained open through Aug. 30.
MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN CLOSING: Located on California’s Eastern Sierra range, approximately 100 miles south of the Nevada state line and 50 minutes from the eastern gate of Yosemite, Mammoth Mountain often stays open into June or July. But August? Not too often.
This is only the third time in the resort’s 69-year history that Mammoth has remained open into August. The other two times were 1995 and 2017.
This 2022-23 ski season opened Nov. 5 at Mammoth and closed the first Sunday in August, just 96 days away from its scheduled reopening Nov. 10, 2023.
Mammoth was able to extend the season into August due to a staggering amount of snowfall this season, the most in resort history. The resort received 885 inches of snow at its summit and 715 at its base lodge area. In an average season, Mammoth usually gets around 400 inches of snow at its base.
PALISADES TAHOE: Following an extremely long season, Palisades Tahoe was the last resort open in Lake Tahoe this season, shutting down for good on Fourth of July.
There was Fourth of July skiing and snowboarding this summer in Lake Tahoe, thanks to 723 inches of snowfall the Tahoe ski resort received in the 2022-23 season, the most in resort history.
Aside from Palisades Tahoe, no other Tahoe ski resort was open past the middle of May. Diamond Peak closed May 1, Heavenly stopped running its lifts May 7, and Kirkwood concluded its season May 14.
