Snow has been consistent this weekend at Tahoe ski resorts as the totals continue to mount and more lifts and terrain become available.
That doesn’t mean it’s a wonderful day to be on the Tahoe slopes. Sunday is not a day for the meek with winds, consistent snow and chilly temperatures making it a challenging day for skiers and snowboarders.
Both Boreal Mountain and neighboring Soda Springs received the largest amount of snow over the 24-hour period, ending Sunday morning both reporting 20 inches. Mt. Rose received 18 inches, while Kirkwood, Palisades Tahoe and Sugar Bowl all got 14 inches.
The National Weather Service says the snow showers will be widespread Sunday across the region, starting early in the morning and continuing throughout the day and into the evening.
Palisades Tahoe put out a statement earlier in the week that could speak for all Tahoe ski resorts during the multiple snow days.
“Our goal is to open as much terrain as possible in the quickest and safest manner allowed,” a message on the Palisades Tahoe website stated.
Palisades Tahoe started Sunday with 10 available lifts, but the Mountain Run was unavailable. The Alpine Meadows side of Palisades was closed early Sunday morning for avalanche mitigation.
Winds are definitely a factor at Heavenly. Just past the noon hour, increasing severe weather and winds shut down the Nevada side of Heavenly and the Gondola for the day.
Due to significant snowfall, Northstar had lift and terrain delays in the morning. At Sugar Bowl, the opened the Disney chair for the first time this season.
Closed all last season due to fire damage, Sierra-at-Tahoe opened Saturday with 25 inches of fresh snow, the largest total of any Tahoe ski resort from the storm.
All but three Tahoe ski resorts – Homewood, Tahoe Donner, Granlibakken – are open for the 2022-23 season.
