A new snowmaking system is among the improvements Sugar Bowl ski resort is making this offseason.
Located a short drive off Interstate 80 at the Norden exit, Sugar Bowl has been gearing up this summer for the 2018-19 season. The grand vision is beginning to unfold as ground is breaking and snowmaking pipe is being installed around the resort.
The mountain operations team recently opened up the rock face along Judah Bound to bury the formerly above ground snowmaking lines.
In the past, the trail connection from the Village to Judah Lodge could not open until the exposed, knee-high pipes were covered with early season snow. Moving forward with the new lines now underground, Sugar Bowl will be able to expand ski terrain across the base areas much faster than in the past.
The Sugar Bowl team will begin placing new guns on the mountain in mid-September, followed by extensive testing so the system will be primed and ready for the first cold snap.
The new snowmaking system improvements will cover terrain from the base of the Lake Tahoe area resort to the top off the Mt. Judah, Jerome Hill, Christmas Tree and Mt. Lincoln Express chairs. Sugar Bowl says the White Pine Quad chair and Judah Kids will be open daily for the upcoming season.
The 2018-19 ski season will likely arrive within 100 days in the Lake Tahoe region. Sugar Bowl is still selling 2018/19 season passes. Skiers and snowboarders can lock in the lowest available rate, plus get more friends and family 50-percent off tickets when they buy a pass by Oct. 31.
