Lake Tahoe ski resorts are giddy regarding the snow totals that have been piling up this week. No one is any happier than Sugar Bowl, which was reporting 7 feet of new snow Thursday morning (Jan. 5).
Perched at the top of Donner Summit where winter storms have been known to slam into the Lake Tahoe region, Sugar Bowl has received 201 inches of snow season-to-date, with current base depths averaging 56-81 inches.
“We’ve received an incredible amount of snow over the last few days, giving us a solid base that will offer fantastic skiing and snowboarding conditions long into the spring,” said Jon Slaughter, director of marketing and sales at Sugar Bowl Resort and Royal Gorge Cross Country.
While Friday appears to be rare sunny day at Lake Tahoe ski resorts, the snow is expected to continue Saturday, especially at higher elevations. More storms are lined up for next week with the first one moving in Tuesday-Wednesday and another Thursday-Friday. These storms look colder and could bring significant snowfall, according to Snow Forecaster Bryan Allegretto.
“Forecasts are calling for additional winter storms to move through the region over the weekend and well into next week, which will make for an amazing Martin Luther King holiday weekend,” Slaughter said. “We’re only five days into the month and we’re already experiencing the snowiest month of the season so far.”
Northstar California is reporting 29 inches of snow in the last 24 hours and has 74 inches overall from the recent storms. On the other end of Lake Tahoe, Heavenly Mountain received 30 inches of snow and 70 inches total. Kirkwood Mountain got 22 inches over the past day.
