A winter storm warning that could deliver 2 feet of new snow by this weekend would serve as an early Christmas gift for skiers and snowboarders heading to a Lake Tahoe ski resort for the holidays.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting 1 to 2 feet of snow above 7,000 feet, with 8 to 16 inches possible at lake level by Saturday afternoon. Amounts higher than 2 feet could fall along the Sierra Crest.
The heaviest of snow is expected Friday afternoon through midday Saturday. It won’t make for great skiing days, thanks to gusts of winds that could reach 40 mph and create whiteout conditions for Lake Tahoe ski resorts.
Light snow showers are predicted in the mountains for Sunday, Christmas day.
