Although there’s still 13 days left in the month, Squaw Valley has already established a new record for snowfall in February.
“Februburied” continues for all Tahoe ski resorts with the snow coming down in bunches Saturday (Feb. 16) and the previous three days. And much more snow is expected to arrive into next week.
Check out the latest snow totals below in TAHOE SNOW REPORT.
By Saturday morning, Squaw Valley had picked up another 30 inches of snow in the past 24 hours and now has 205 inches in February, breaking the old mark of 196 inches in February 2017. If the snow continues anything like the previous two weeks, Squaw could obliterate its old record, considering there are still 13 days left in February.
And it’s already been a fabulous 2018-19 season for snow totals at Squaw. With 462 inches (39 feet) of snow this season, Squaw has already exceeded its total annual average snowfall of 450 inches just halfway through the season. That’s the most snow of any Tahoe ski resort.
Squaw Valley is reporting 54 inches of snow over the past two days. It’s a timely snowfall, one that should benefit skiers and riders for President’s Day weekend, assuming they can get to the famed Olympic resort off Highway 88 in Truckee. Interstate-80 was closed approximately 24 hours before reopening Friday night. Highway 50, the main corridor into South Lake Tahoe, has been closed down periodically since Thursday night as well. Both roadways were open Saturday.
“Guests planning to ski and ride this weekend should be informed on what’s going on – check the CalTrans Quick Map app, and look at our Squaw Alpine app for updated lift and weather status,” said Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows spokesperson Liesl Hepburn. “Our crews are out there working hard to rebuild access on the mountain, shovel out lifts, clear parking areas, and perform avalanche control. It does appear that snow and high winds will be diminishing by Sunday.”
Saturday morning, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows was reporting 16 lifts operating. Crews were out early working to dig out more lifts, rebuild mountain access roads and perform avalanche control.
Visibility is limited with heavy snowfall and high winds. Squaw officials are encouraging skiers and snowboarders to familiarize themselves with Deep Snow Safety.
Joining Squaw Valley in the 400-inch club this year are Sugar Bowl and Homewood Mountain. Sugar Bowl has received 180 inches of snow in February, including 51 in the past two days, putting its season total at 415 inches. Homewood has a season total of 428 inches that includes 75 inches in the past four days.
Both Boreal Mountain and Soda Springs recorded the most snow among Tahoe ski resorts the past 48 hours, getting 64 inches. Both resorts had a whopping 40 inches of snow from Thursday to Friday morning.
The Vail Resorts in Lake Tahoe have all been hard hit over the past week. Northstar California is reporting 113 inches during the past week, Heavenly Mountain has 112, and Kirkwood isn’t far behind with 94 inches.
