Snow continues to dump at Lake Tahoe ski resorts and that trend is expected to continue through the weekend.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning for the Lake Tahoe region through Monday for heavy storms that began Friday. Following a break in the weather later on Saturday, another storm system is expected to follow – Sunday into Monday.
Most Lake Tahoe ski resorts were adding to their impressive totals today after another big day of snowfall Thursday. Sugar Bowl continues to be covered in snow after 17-22 inches fell in a 24-hour period – Thursday through early Friday morning. This week’s storms have dropped 43 inches on Sugar Bowl and season to date the resort has 254-388 inches.
Homewood Mountain was reporting 11-20 inches of snow this morning, while Mt. Rose had 13-15 inches of new snow and has a whopping 412 inches this season.
The NWS is predicting that lake level in the Tahoe Basin, upwards of 40 inches of snow are expected through Monday. Winds were high today and 55 mph gusts are forecast for the basin this weekend, and Sierra ridge winds could be as high as100 mph.
Power outages took place last week in the Lake Tahoe region. There are more power outages possible in the region this weekend. Visitors should prepare for enough food, water and emergency supplies like flashlights and battery-operated radios.
Driving should be treacherous this weekend, so motorists can expect delays, especially Sunday.
The good news for skiers and snowboarders is the snow will likely end Tuesday evening. Weather forecasters are calling for some sunny days, starting Wednesday and lasting through next weekend.
