Although still in the midst of the largest snow storm this season, the snow totals at Lake Tahoe ski resorts are already quite amazing.
The storm hit Lake Tahoe ski resorts Wednesday evening and by Friday morning the totals were as high as 36 inches. The raging storm system is expected to continue into Saturday afternoon and create multiple powder days for skiers and snowboaders.
Although it’s been a subpar year for snow overall, it’s really starting to feel like winter the past few weeks at Lake Tahoe ski resorts following a very disappointing January and most of February. Many resorts have now gone well over the 100-inch mark this season.
Three Lake Tahoe ski resorts – Mt. Rose, Boreal Mountain, Kirkwood Mountain – had the most reported snow at 36 inches. However, there were several other Lake Tahoe ski resorts that nearly had 3 feet of snow as well.
All 14 Lake Tahoe ski resorts received 19 or more inches over the previous 24-hour period.
“This winter storm moved in fast and packed a punch,” said Mike Pierce, director of marketing at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe. “Thanks to our high base elevation at 8,260 feet, we’ve had a great season so far, but this truly is the icing on the cake. This storm will set us up well for phenomenal spring skiing and riding.”
Season-to-date, Mt. Rose has received 134 inches of snow at its base and 175 inches at the summit.
The Vail Resorts in the Lake Tahoe region have been rejoicing of late. Following big totals over the previous 24 hours, Kirkwood Mountain has received 60 inches in the past week, Heavenly Mountain has 44 and Northstar California received 36 inches.
Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows may have the highest season total among the Lake Tahoe ski resorts with 197 inches. It received 32 inches in the latest 24-hour period and has been hit with 57 inches over the past week.
Other high totals for the season include Soda Springs with 160 inches, Sugar Bowl with 159 inches and Sierra-at-Tahoe with 141. Boreal Mountain has gotten 77 inches of snow over the past week and 168 inches for the season.
Like Many Lake Tahoe ski resorts, Diamond Peak was digging out Friday morning after receiving 28 inches of fresh snow. Skiers and snowboarders who arrived early Friday morning found 15 inches of fresh overnight powder, and new terrain open on both the upper and lower mountain.
