Although the snow totals keep adding up over the past week, the calendar says its spring time. And for many Lake Tahoe ski resorts, this time of year means spring skiing events.
Northstar California ski resort has received 34 inches of new snow in the past week, and beckons spring skiers to partake in a true convergence of the seasons this weekend. The Spring It On! Festival brings family-friendly fun, activities, and the highly-anticipated annual pond skim contest.
“We’ve received so much fresh snow just before some of our most anticipated spring events, which means phenomenal skiing and riding and added excitement to this weekend’s festivities,” said Bill Rock senior vice president and chief operating officer at Northstar. “Spring It On is an annual family tradition at Northstar, and I’m sure we’ll see a lot of powder skis-turned-water skis for the pond skim contest.”
Saturday’s activities
Saturday’s Spring It On! activities offer complimentary face painting and balloon twisting at The Lodge at Big Springs for kids and kids-at-heart.
For guests ready for an all-mountain adventure, the complimentary EpicMix Scavenger Hunt will take place throughout Northstar form 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Teams of two or more will receive a set of clues, travel the mountain with their own team camera or phone, and snap creative photos to accumulate points. Point-winning clues include secret locations, creative photos from EpicMix photographers, and other fun mountain stops.
Registration is from 9-10:30 a.m. and awards take place at 3:30 p.m., both on the Gondola Deck at mid-mountain.
Sunday activities
The highly-anticipated annual Pond Skim will take place mid-mountain from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Pond Skim is free to enter and limited to a maximum of 75 competitors.
Same-day registration is from 9-10:30 on the Gondola Deck. With much of the winning criteria based on costumes and style, this year’s “luau” theme is guaranteed to bring out each competitor’s inner-Aloha. Special prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place; and the skimmer with the best costume will also receive an award.
“With great conditions as well as signature events scheduled throughout the month, skiers can try Northstar and then apply the value of a day lift ticket toward next winter’s season pass,” Rock said. “Now is the time to experience the best resorts in Tahoe.”
Season pass purchasers may apply the price of their lift ticket on the same day of use toward the full payment of a 2014-1015 pass; or, pay $49 down to secure the early rate and pay the balance in mid-September.
Additionally, Northstar currently offers season pass holders 40 percent off lodging through the remainder of the 2013-2014 ski season.
2014-2015 season passes are now available starting at $409. With access to more than 10,270 skiable acres at the region’s three premier mountain resorts—Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California and Kirkwood Mountain Resort—Lake Tahoe’s only true three-mountain season passes provide season-long access to the most diverse and quality experience Lake Tahoe has to offer.
