Snowmaking has begun at Northstar California ski resort. And judging by this week’s projected low evening temperatures, it makes sense that more Tahoe ski resorts will soon be running their snow guns as well.
Located off Highway 267 in Truckee, Northstar California began making snow over the weekend. According to a Vail Resorts press release, two other Tahoe ski resorts – Heavenly and Kirkwood – should follow with snowmaking within the next week. Vail Resorts says it has the largest combined snowmaking system on the West Coast of the United States.
“Northstar kicked off snowmaking this weekend, a sure sign that winter is just around the corner,” a Northstar press release stated. “Our team completing its first night of snowmaking always gets us stoked for the approaching ski and ride season.”
OPENING DAY: Weather and conditions permitting. both Heavenly and Northstar have plans to open for skiing and snowboarding Friday, Nov. 18, Kirkwood has a planned opening Friday, Dec. 2.
All this week, temperatures in the Lake Tahoe region are slated to be in the low 20s and high teens, allowing most Tahoe ski resorts fire up their snowmaking equipment and take advantage of the cooler temperatures and low humidity at every opportunity.
