It’s been a good January in terms of snow totals thus far for Tahoe ski resorts.
The Tahoe region experienced its third storm in the New Year on Wednesday, with totals exceeding a foot or more at six Tahoe ski resorts.
The downside to the snow was the news early Wednesday (Jan. 10) at Palisades Tahoe. A tragic avalanche Wednesday claimed the life of skier Kenneth Kidd.
Due to the ramifications of the avalanche, Palisades Tahoe is experiencing morning delays. The resort will take longer to assess the terrain and get the mountain open due to yesterday’s early closure.
“It will be a rigorous snow safety morning for both Palisades and Alpine today,” the Jan. 11 operations report states.
The site of the avalanche – KT-22 – will remain closed Thursday. The access road for the lift was lost in the avalanche and the resort says with the overnight snow, they have not been able to reestablish the road.
Mt. Rose received the most snow from Wednesday’s storm, reporting 20 inches at its summit. Heavenly got 19 inches, Northstar had 15 inches, and both Palisades Tahoe and Diamond Peak both had 14 inches.
Although it’s another powder day at Tahoe ski resorts, the conditions will be challenging. Temperatures were in the teens Thursday morning and there’s a chance of high winds once again.
CENTRAL VALLEY SKI RESORTS – Dodge Ridge, Bear Valley, China Peak – which make up the Cali Pass Resorts – all received significant snow totals Thursday morning.
China Peak had the most snow with 14 inches, Dodge Ridge got 11 and Bear Valley reported 10 inches of new snow.
