Following multiple days last week where warm weather led to spring skiing, Mother Nature delivered a nice wallop this weekend with more than 2 feet of new snow at several Tahoe ski resorts.
March apparently is not done with the Tahoe region. It has been a big month for snow totals, thanks in a large part to 6-8 feet of snow several weeks ago. While making conditions terrific for this time of year, the additional snow has also pushed back the closing dates for many ski resorts.

“Our snowfall to date is currently sitting at 96% of average while our snow-water equivalent (the amount of water stored in our snow) is 105% of average,” a Sugar Bowl blog stated Sunday (March 24). “As of Feb. 29, we were sitting at closer to 82%, so this month’s storms have been huge for snow pack. And it’s not over yet.”
Indeed it’s not. The snow subsided early Sunday morning, but will return by Wednesday (March 27) and continue until Easter Sunday.
Palisades Tahoe received the most snow from the two-day storm, reporting 27 inches at its summit by Sunday morning. Both Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe got 26 inches, while Sugar Bowl received 24 inches, bolstering its season total to 420 inches, easily the most among Tahoe ski resorts.
WEATHER FORECAST: Expect some scattered snow showers continuing Sunday morning and they may continue throughout the day. Good news arrives with the high weekend winds dropping with high temperatures in the 30s. It should be mostly sunny Monday and Tuesday with temperature highs nearing 40 degrees.
Stormy weather is forecast as early as Wednesday afternoon and continuing into Thursday. The snow will be accompanied by increasing winds and clouds during the day with ridgetop gusts up to 70-80 mph by the end of the day. Friday and Saturday are likely snowy days as well.
