Maddie Bowman of South Lake Tahoe goes for gold Monday, trying to repeat as women’s Olympic freestyle skiing champion.
The Sierra-at-Tahoe skier placed sixth (83.80) in qualifying Sunday and will be one of 12 freestyle skiers vying Monday night for the halfpipe crown at the PyeongChang Olympics.
The top qualifier was Cassie Sharp (93.40) of Canada, followed by Marie Martinod (91.80) of France.
Also qualifying for the freestyle skiing finals was Brita Sigourney, who does her training at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows. On her first run in Sunday’s qualifying, she scored a 90.60, the highest total early in the competition. That score is third highest going into tonight’s finals.
Sigourney, who grew up in Carmel, finished sixth in the halfpipe in Sochi and is the first women to land a 1080 in a competition halfpipe run, which she did during the 2012 X Games in Aspen.
Expected to be a top contender, U.S. skier Devin Logan failed to qualify. The other American qualifier was Annalisa Drew (81.80).
Bowman has been dominant in freestyle skiing halfpipe and was the inaugural gold medal winner in the Sochi Olympics. She has medaled in the past seven X Games, including five golds. Bowman took first last month at the X Games in Aspen, landing back-to-back 900s during her winning run.
