After more than a week of spring-like weather, snow, rain and lower temperatures are expected to return this week to the Lake Tahoe region. The National Weather Service in Reno is predicting the first storm is expected Tuesday with a second probably stronger storm arriving later in the week.
There will be an estimated 4 to 8 inches of snow Tuesday on higher Sierra passes like Mt. Rose and Echo summits. Several inches of snow are possible at lake level and lower elevation areas in Truckee and South Lake Tahoe.
“Donner Pass could see occasional slushy accumulations Tuesday with accumulating snow on the road becoming more likely Tuesday evening as snow levels drop. Winds will pick up Monday with the stronger winds expected Tuesday,” according to an NWS statement.
Precipitation should start Monday night with the heaviest precipitation expected Tuesday morning through early afternoon. Snow levels are forecast to start at 7,000 to 8,000 feet by Tuesday morning and will likely drop to 5,500 to 6,500 feet by Wednesday morning.
Over the weekend, NWS-Reno issued the following information.
- The heaviest snow will fall between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
- 10 to 20 inches of snow is possible along the Sierra crest
- Up to 1 foot of snow is possible above 7,000 feet.
- Up to 3 inches of snow is possible down to 6,000 feet.
Another storm will probably arrive Friday night. The NWS feels it’s too early to predict potential snow and/or rain totals.
