The holiday season has been a good one thus far at Kirkwood Mountain Resort, which has 100 percent of its terrain – 11 lifts and 86 trails – available for skiing and snowboarding over the Christmas holidays.
Kirkwood ski resort features 2,300 acres for skiers and riders. It has all four bowls open, along with one terrain park. The Outlaw park is expected to be open later in the week.
Kirkwood ski resort will open its Vista tow and Covered Wagon #1 & #2 surface tows when it receives enough snow to operate. The three need a significant amount of snow to maintain a path that both skiers and riders can slide on.
In the month of December, Kirkwood ski resort has received 53 inches of new snow at its base elevation of 7,800 feet and had significantly more snow (83 inches) at its summit. Kirkwood ski resort now has 65 inches of snow at its base with 103 inches at the summit.
The snow pack and the cool holiday temperatures have resulted in a very busy holiday season for Kirkwood ski resort, which is located in the Lake Tahoe region on Highway 88 in the tiny town of Kirkwood.
“What a great way to start out the season. Winter is here and we are very thankful for all the snow and to be back hosting our guests with these great conditions,” said Kirkwood ski resort spokesperson Kevin Cooper.
Cooper anticipates the strong Christmas holidays to spill over into January.
“Good conditions and 100 percent open over the holidays will set the tone in the minds of skiers and riders,” Cooper said. “This year we have already logged in four powder days at Kirkwood. What we are looking at is a normal winter pattern, consistent precipitation moving across the state, small storms, easy to navigate, and great for the mountain and fun for all to enjoy.”
