Historically, there have been many years when Kirkwood Mountain has received the most snow of any Lake Tahoe ski resort.
This may again be one of those years.
Kirkwood gets dumped on
During the recent snow storms in the Lake Tahoe region, Kirkwood ski resort got seriously dumped on. The resort, located off Highway 88, received an amazing 112 inches (just over 9 feet) of snow in a 12-day period.
And Saturday night (Feb. 15) Kirkwood added to its snow totals, unexpectedly receiving between 5-9 inches of new snow, created another powder day for skiing and snowboarding.
Kirkwood currently has a 62-inch depth at its base and the summit has 70 inches.
“We received 5 to 9 inches of snow in the past 12 hours here. It was a great day on the mountain,” said Kirkwood ski resort spokesperson Kevin Cooper said this afternoon. “Sunshine and blue skies and by mid-day temperatures were in the low 40s. It is so pleasant to see smiling faces and passionate adventure families here enjoying our mid-winter conditions.”
Mountain now 100 percent open
Before the storm, Kirkwood ski resort was suffering like all Lake Tahoe ski resorts with little snow, other than the man-made kind. It was running five chairlifts, 1, 5, 6, 11. Now the resort is 100 percent open and is accessing 2,300 acres of terrain.
Newly-opened signature runs at Kirkwood ski resort – such as Wagon Wheel Bowl, Palisades – were being enjoyed by skiers and riders for Presidents’ Day weekend.
“We are looking in mid-winter shape and today the mountain opened up to the roar of snow hungry skiers and riders, We call it ‘POW Hunt’n’ here,” said Cooper, referring to a powder day at Kirkwood. “The energy level from our staff and our guests was amazing.”
Hosts Rahlves Banzai Tour next weekend
Kirkwood ski resort will be the first leg of the Rahlves Banzai Tour next weekend. The popular Lake Tahoe ski race attracts skiers and snowboarders from the region and also nationwide.
The tour was created by Daron Rahlves, an Olympic skier from Truckee. Rahlves typically participates in the Banzai finals.
