In conjuncture with its 60th year of operation, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe is splurging, making $2.2 million in major capital improvements to the Nevada ski resort for the 2024-25 season.
The Mt. Rose ski resort project will include a complete dining area renovation featuring a new Taco Bar, snowmaking system enhancements, trail improvements, and a new snowcat to support the resort’s ability to offer a high-quality snow surface. Mt. Rose’s popular ‘Open Late’ schedule will also be extended to include both Fridays and Saturdays, starting in February 2025.
“This season will mark two milestone anniversaries at Mt. Rose – the resort’s 60th, and the 20th anniversary of The Chutes,” said Mike Pierce, Mt. Rose marketing and sales director. “We’ll not only celebrate these events all season long with our guests, but are upgrading our facilities and equipment so that we can continue to offer an exceptional experience and high level of service.”
Mt. Rose is located off the Mt. Rose Highway, approximately 10 miles from Incline Village in North Lake Tahoe and 25 miles from Reno. The base elevation of 8,260 feet is the highest among all Tahoe ski resorts.
The extremely challenging Chutes offers 1,500 vertical feet of north/east facing terrain for advanced skiers and riders, providing some of the longest continuous vertical in North America – 40 to 55 degree runs for over 1,000 feet.
On the mountain, the Around the World trail, popular with advanced beginner and low intermediate skiers and riders, will benefit from trail improvements. The trail was enhanced to offer skiers and snowboarders more room to spread out – the trail was widened in the zone approaching the Lariat Junction.
Another notable change is the Mountain View dining area, located on the upper level of the resort’s Main Lodge. It has undergone a full refresh over the summer, including new furniture and improved guest experience and traffic flow.
Mt. Rose’s popular Timbers Taco stand will also have a new permanent home in the Mountain View dining area. The new Taco Bar will sell street tacos, nachos, and other traditional Mexican food favorites. Other lodge improvements include further touches to the revamped Lodgepole Cafe and improved flooring in the servery.
Continuing its commitment to skiers and riders, the resort has invested in more snowmaking system upgrades that will allow for increased production when temperatures begin to drop in October. That includes the ability to produce maximum output whenever weather and conditions allow. This will allow resort guests to have a better chance to enjoy high-quality snow conditions and increased coverage in the early season.
The resort’s snow surface will also benefit from the newest snowcat joining the Mt. Rose fleet to maintain the trails with precision grooming all season long.
Beginning in late February 2025, Mt. Rose’s popular “Open Late” schedule will be expanded to two days per week – Friday and Saturday. Select lifts will remain open until 6 p.m. both days for those who want to extend their day and make the most of longer days in the sun.
Friday Night Gates will also return with more teams to be added to the field, and “Bonus Mondays” will be back to the Daily Special Options with heavily discounted Monday lifts tickets for anyone who skis at Mt. Rose the previous Saturday or Sunday (void on holidays).

SNOWBALL EFFECT PARNERSHIP: Mt. Rose and Snowball Effect have announced a strategic partnership to address key challenges in the winter sports industry by engaging local youth year-round. This collaboration comes in response to the industry trend of declining participation, highlighted by the NSAA’s most recent Kottke Report.
“Our priority at Mt. Rose continues to be our people, respect for the planet, and creating amazing experiences for our customers,” said Greg Gavrilets, General Manager of Mt. Rose. “This partnership with Snowball Effect allows us to share our passion for winter sports with more kids and communities than ever before. We’re excited about the potential to grow our sport and make a positive impact in Northern Nevada.”
Key aspects of the partnership include:
- Bringing snowboarding to elementary schools, stadiums, and non-winter venues in the Washoe Valley and Reno area.
- Collaboration between Mt. Rose’s Snowsports Children’s instructors and Jeff Boliba, inventor of the Riglet Reel and Riglet Snowboarding program, to develop a comprehensive curriculum.
- Development and implementation of activation plans for both on-resort and off-resort events and programs.
“Our year-round engagement programs will keep kids connected to winter sports regardless of the season,” said Boliba, Founder & Owner of Snowball Effect. “We’ll bring Mt. Rose’s offerings directly to the community through portable environments, fostering a love for winter sports and overcoming weather and financial-related barriers. Our collaboration extends beyond the slopes, with comprehensive activation plans both on and off the resort.”
