Three of Lake Tahoe’s major ski resorts are opening more terrain today, thanks to another snow storm that came in Friday and continues today.
The three Vail Resorts – Northstar California, Heavenly Mountain, Kirkwood Mountain – are providing more lifts and runs today for skiing and snowboarding.
Overnight, Northstar received 4 inches of fresh snow with more expected this weekend. The ski resort off Highway 267 in Truckee now has 70 trails and 4 terrain parks open with 19 lifts spinning. Northstar’s cross country center is also open with 5K of freshly groomed trails for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing.
Riding Fat Bikes is also available now at Northstar, offering a diversion for people who may not want to ski or ride that day. Fat Biking is new at Northstar this season. Fat bike rentals will be available for daily use on 100 percent of the resort’s groomed cross country trail system.
The extra wide, low pressure tires combined with very efficient gearing and geometry allow Fat Bike riders to get out and experience the peaceful beauty of the winter mountain environment that cross country skiers and snowshoers have enjoyed for years.
Kirkwood received 7.5 inches on its summit Friday and is hoping to open 100 percent of its terrain today with Chairs 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9,10, 11 all operating for skiers and riders.
Heavenly received 2 inches of new snow and has 92 runs open today with 25 lifts running. It also opened its Groove Terrain Park, Mott and Killebrew Canyons, and Boulder Lodge. Heavenly also has tubing and mini-tubing now open seven days a week.
