Lake Tahoe ski resorts are still anxiously waiting for that first big storm to really get the 2023-24 ski season underway.
Despite the lack of snow thus far, there are eight Tahoe ski resorts open as of Dec. 1. SEE TAHOE SKI RESORT OPENINGS BELOW.
At Palisades Tahoe on Friday (Dec. 1) morning, the resort had to 2-3 inches of snow from an overnight snowfall. Tahoe’s largest ski resort offers a comment that many Tahoe ski resorts could issue right now.
“It has been a bit of a slow start to the season, but our mountain operations team has been working around the clock to open more terrain,” said Palisades Tahoe spokesperson Madison Condon said.
Both Sugar Bowl and Kirkwood opened for the season Friday morning. Kirkwood joined the two other Vail Resorts in Tahoe (Heavenly, Northstar California) that had previously opened for the season.
“We’re stoked to have seen so many smiling faces getting their early season turns in, especially after getting some new snow overnight just in time for the first day of the season. It was a blast welcoming all our guests back to the hill,” said Kirkwood spokesperson Ashlee Lambert said.
The available terrain at the combined eight Tahoe ski resorts is minimal, but it hasn’t seemed to bother many skiers and snowboarders, who have been anxiously waiting to make some turns this season.
Mt. Rose has perhaps the most open terrain. Located in Nevada near Incline Village, the resort has four lifts and 10 runs operating thanks to running its artificial snow making operation since late October.
WEATHER UPDATE: The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting possible snow showers Friday and throughout the weekend that could lead to more runs opening throughout the Tahoe region.
The NWS is predicting a 40% chance of snow Friday night through Sunday. The weather is supposed to be mostly sunny and milder Monday through Wednesday of next week. A chance for some colder air and snow showers could arrive by either Thursday or Friday. But there are no big storms on the horizon.
SIERRA-AT-TAHOE UPDATE: Due to a lack of suitable conditions, the resort off Highway 50 near South Lake Tahoe has pushed back its planned opening this week. There is no new opening date as of Friday.
“We are one good storm away from opening for the 2023-24 winter season, but will be postponing our tentatively scheduled Dec. 2 opening until Mother Nature turns on the snow spigot,” a Sierra-at-Tahoe email stated.
