One of the most iconic Lake Tahoe ski traditions takes place Sunday – the Cushing Crossing at Squaw Valley ski resort.
The 27th annual Cushing Crossing takes place at 1 pm today (May 28). The energizing, comical at times event is the original pond skimming contest that started a spring skiing ritual. Every year Squaw Valley has a celebrity judging panel and emcee for the crowd-pleasing spectacle.
Cushing Crossing features big spills and many laughable moments. The awards will be given out at 3 p.m. at the KT Base Bar.
Squaw Valley is one of three Lake Tahoe ski resorts that are offering skiing and snowboarding for the Memorial Day weekend. Also open are Mt. Rose ski resort in Nevada and Donner Ski Ranch.
Squaw, the famed Olympic ski resort, has committed to remaining open in June and also Fourth of July and beyond. This is the fourth time that Squaw has remained open on July 4 and the first time in resort history to go past that date.
Beyond the Fourth of July, Squaw Valley plans to operate the Shirley Lake Express chair on Saturdays for 2017-18 Tahoe Super Passholders. Discounted daily lift tickets will also be available.
Located near Lake Tahoe, Mt. Rose is offering one final weekend of skiing and snowboarding before closing for the season on Memorial Day. The resort is encouraging skiers and riders to not wear pants this holiday weekend – ski pants that is!
In celebration of the extended season and warm temperatures, Mt. Rose has declared this “no pants weekend” as it encourages skiers and riders to hit the slopes in bathing suits and board shorts.
The resort will finish strong with more than 13 feet of snow still stacked up on its slopes. Access to all areas of the mountain and terrain for all ability levels will be via four lifts, including Northwest 6, Blazing Zephyr 6, Wizard and Chuter. Skiing and riding takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Monday, May 29.
Family-friendly Donner Ski Ranch is located off Interstate 80 and Donner Summit. The resort will operate Chairs 1 & 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Memorial Day Weekend. Tickets are selling for as little as $12. There will be drinks, food and barbecue on the deck and also homemade pies.
It’s been quite the season for snowfall at Donner Ski Ranch, which has received 762 inches. The enormous snow total is the primary reason the ski resort has decided to keep operating. Donner Ski Ranch has not announced a closing date yet.
