Snow totals have exceeded 500 inches at many Lake Tahoe ski resorts this season. And for the first time in what seems like months, there appears to be an extended period of sunny skies and agreeable temperatures in the Tahoe region.
The daytime temperatures are rising into the low 50s on Thursday, the sun will be out on many of those days, and no snow is not expected to fall in the Lake Tahoe region for perhaps a week or more. The beautiful conditions should create a wonderful week of more of skiing and snowboarding, which is a rarity over the past 10 weeks or more.
One more thing makes the next week appealing – road conditions won’t be a major issue, another rarity this winter. However, Highway 50 remains reduced to one lane in each direction for less than a mile at two locations, three miles from East of Pollock Pines and one mile from West of Riverton at Bridal Veil Falls. The lane is closed due to a damaged section and could remain that way for a few more weeks. Motorists can expect delays, especially during the weekend.
“This weekend is looking good with open roads and sunny weather,” said Ruth Loehr, public information officer for South Lake Tahoe California Highway Patrol. “We advise motorists to stay on the main roads, have a safe traveling distance between cars and avoid driving over potholes. As a reminder, it is mandatory to carry chains in the winter months as the weather can shift, and we’ve seen that happen this season.”
Lake Tahoe is experiencing a winter of epic proportions with summit snow totals approaching 680 inches at three ski resorts (Mt. Rose, Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch) since November. Last weekend’s storm added 2-4 feet at the summit and 1-2 feet at lake level, making Tahoe the snowiest destination in North America. Yearly snow totals typically average 400-500 inches.
