A much-needed snow arrived in the Lake Tahoe region on Tuesday. Although the snow totals were modest, the cold weather is perfect for snow-making.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are certainly winter-like in the Sierra and will remain that way through the weekend. The high in Truckee and the Tahoe region today is expected to be in the high 20s and the low morning temperatures are around 2 degrees.
More snow in the forecast?
Those chilly temperatures will stay in place for Thursday, while Friday there is a chance of snow. A second storm system is expected to move through the Tahoe area, and one Tahoe ski resort said the storm could bring up to a foot of snow Friday and Saturday.
Northstar California recorded the largest snowfall among the six Lake Tahoe ski resorts that are operating, reporting 8 inches of fresh snow this morning at its summit. The cold front delivered 4 inches toSquaw Valley and neighboring Alpine Meadows.
On Tahoe’s south shore, Heavenly had a nice dumping on Tuesday with a reported 6 inches of new snow. Another Vail Resort – Kirkwood – reported 3 inches of snow.
Snow-making prevalent
Back on the north shore, Mt.Rose ski resort had 4 inches of snow. Although not open yet, Homewood ski resort received 5 inches of snow on its upper mountain. Like many resorts, Homewood’s snowmaking crew has fired up its snowmaking guns to augment what Mother Nature is delivering.
Homewood’s forecasted opening day for skiing and snowboarding remains Friday, Dec. 13. However, the new snowfall has management evaluating whether the resort could open earlier.
