A third California ski resort will open Friday (Oct. 29). Boreal Mountain joins Palisades Tahoe and Mammoth Mountain in the early openings for the 2021-22 ski season.
Located off Interstate 80 at Donner Summit, Boreal Mountain will begin running its lifts at 10 a.m. on Friday for skiers and snowboarders, the earliest date the resort has experienced in a decade.
Boreal received 3 feet of snow from the hard-hitting storm that arrived Sunday morning and lasted through early Monday morning.
“When the sun went down and the heavy rains turned into rapid snowfall (Sunday), the excitement started building, and the Boreal crew was ready to respond,” Boreal stated in a media advisory. “Multiple teams began working around the clock to get the property ready for action.”
For the early season, Boreal will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Boreal expects to expand to seven days a week by Nov. 19.
AVAILABLE TERRAIN: Boreal will start the season with the Castle Peak and Accelerator open for skiers and riders.
Guests are required to purchase tickets or passes before they arrive. Unlimited Passholders and Woodward Members will have full access during all operating hours.
Night Passholders will have access from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Lift tickets and 3-Pack ticket packages will also be available.
Lessons and rentals will not be available until further notice. The Grind Cafe on the second floor of Woodward Tahoe will be open. The Subie Shack will be open Friday through Sunday outdoors, offering food and drinks.
The lower level of the lodge will be open for restrooms and guest services only. The upper levels with the Café and Hub & Spoke will open Nov. 19.
Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows) announced its early opening Tuesday and Mammoth also committed to become the first California ski resorts to open for the 2021-22 season.
Mammoth is located in Mammoth Lakes, along the 395 corridor in the Eastern Sierra mountain range. It’s roughly a three-hour drive from Reno.
This will mark one of the earliest openings in Palisades’ history. It will open almost a month earlier than planned.
“It will only be the third time in 72 years of operation that the resort has opened in October,” Palisades spokesperson Alex Spychalsky said. “We will be able to have the unique experience of hitting the slopes for Halloween weekend.”
Palisades skiers and snowboarders will be able to ski the upper mountain on Opening Day, with plans to open the Funitel, Gold Coast Express and Shirley Lake Express.
