Winter-like conditions over the past week and the arrival of fresh snow has both Mt. Rose ski resort and Boreal Mountain Resort pulling the trigger Friday in becoming the first California and Nevada ski resorts to open for skiing and snowboarding.
To kick off its 50th anniversary season, Boreal Mountain Resort will open to the public on Friday, November 7, with skiing and snowboarding beginning at 9 a.m. Boreal will offer one run with six terrain park features accessed by the Castle Peak Quad chairlift.
Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe’s open terrain will be limited, but will include terrain accessed by the Flying Jenny Conveyor Lift on the Main Lodge side of the resort, and a selection of terrain park features including boxes and rails.
“Last weekend’s storm brought up to 5 inches of fresh snow to Mt. Rose, and with continued cold temperatures, our experienced snowmaking and operations teams have been hard at work adding to that base,” said Mike Pierce, director of marketing at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe. “We’re excited to get winter underway, and to welcome our guests back for another incredible season.”
Mt. Rose, located off Mt. Rose Highway in Nevada, is the closest resort to Reno. Ski resort plans to be open Friday through Sunday, November 7-9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with lift tickets available for purchase at guest services in the Main Lodge for just $10.

Located on the Donner Summit off Interstate 80, Boreal Mountain Resort is known for its early-season operations and conditions. A year ago, Boreal was offering skiing and snowboarding on Nov. 1.
During the Halloween weekend, resort operations staff fired up the snow guns on Oct. 31, and received help from Mother Nature with over 10 inches of natural snow.
Conditions permitting, Boreal Mountain Resort will continue to expand terrain coverage. Check www.rideboreal.com/dailyreport for latest updates.
Two years ago, Boreal was the second Tahoe resort to open, a rarity. For the first time in more than a decade, another Tahoe resort opened earlier. Squaw Valley ran its lifts last fall on Oct. 25, then quickly shut them down in early afternoon.
Three years ago, Boreal opened for skiing and riding on Oct. 28. The earliest opening in Boreal’s history was Oct. 9, 2010.
