It’s been 10 years since the ski season lasted this long at neighboring ski resorts Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. To celebrate the long season, the two hallmark Lake Tahoe ski resorts will stage the Snow Golf at Alpine Meadows and the Cushing Crossing pond skimming competition at Squaw Valley later than usual.
The 33rd annual Snow Golf Tournament is Saturday, April 16, with a grand prize of roundtrip airfare for two on Alaska Airlines. The 26th annual Cushing Crossing pond skimming contest is Saturday, April 23, with prizes including roundtrip airfare for two on Alaska Airlines, a 2016-17 Bronze Tahoe Super Pass and cash prizes.
Neighboring Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows announced recently that they would offer the longest ski season in the Tahoe region, with skiing and riding through Memorial Day on May 30 – conditions and weather permitting.
With over 38 feet of cumulative snowfall this season and a 12-foot base, the resort is offering free skiing and riding for 2016-17 Tahoe Super Passholders through the end of May. Operations will continue seven days a week through the spring at Squaw Valley and/or Alpine Meadows through Monday, May 30, conditions permitting.
Snow Golf Tournament – As the only top-to-bottom snow golf course, the tournament is a unique way for the family to spend a day on the slopes. Teeing off at 9 a.m., the nine-hole course starts at the top of Summit Express Chair, with the last hole leaving golfers at the base of Alpine Bowl Chair. The grand prize is roundtrip airfare for two on Alaska Airlines, and golfers and spectators can join the After Party to take part in a Costume Contest and enter to win fun prizes at the Main Lodge Sun Deck. Cushing Crossing – Sponsored by Alaska Airlines, GoPro and KTKE 101.5 Truckee Tahoe Radio, the iconic pond skimming event returns to the resort, challenging participants to cross the chilly waters of Cushing Pond on skis, a snowboard, or any ski- or snowboard-based vessel – resulting in colossal crashes, ultra-creative contraptions and hilarious costumes, with the spectacle being judge by a celebrity panel.
This year’s Cushing Crossing starts at 1 p.m. at Cushing Pond, located adjacent to the KT Base Bar. The legendary competition will be limited to the first 50 registrants, and participants can register on the day of the event at KT Base Bar. Registration opens at 9 a.m., and is $20 per competitor, with prizes including roundtrip airfare for two on Alaska Airlines, a 2016-17 Bronze Tahoe Super Pass and cash prizes.
