Winter will return Thursday night to Lake Tahoe ski resorts, which are anticipating several feet of snow over the next few days.
After more than a week of spring-like conditions, a major storm is expected to descend on the Lake Tahoe region later tonight. According to Snow Forecaster Bryan Allegretto, Lake Tahoe ski resorts could receive up to 3½ feet of snow by Saturday evening.
Allegretto forecasts that there will be heavy precipitation tonight with snow levels as low as 7,000 to 8,000 feet. The storm could leave 4-13 inches of snow.
Snow should continue Friday with colder temperatures. Some areas could receive up to 15 inches of new snow. Snow showers will linger into Saturday where the winds may gust to 65 mph
There should be a break in the weather Sunday through Wednesday, but spring-like temperatures will not return. Another storm is anticipated Wednesday night through Friday.
Several Lake Tahoe ski resorts have more than 600 inches of snow and extended their season. Northstar California currently has 654 inches and is nearing its season-high record of 685 inches in 2010-11.
Vail Resorts – Northstar and Heavenly – have both lengthened the ski season a week to April 23.
“It’s just been an epic season. We’re in awe of the of the snow conditions this year,” said Northstar spokesperson Marcie Bradley. “We’ve extended the season and people are still excited about being here in April.”
